Superbowl Halftime Show Rumors Already?

The Superbowl is five months away and the rumors have already began buzzing about the halftime show performers.

Although not totally confirmed, it has been reported that Adam Levine and his band, otherwise known as Maroon 5, will be performing at Superbowl 53’s halftime show. Personally I have mixed feelings about this cause I want a good show. I don’t sit through almost four hours of football, a sport I very minimally understand, only to be presented with a lackluster musical performance. I love Maroon 5 and rumor has it they’ll be joined by Cardi B which is also exciting, so I have high hopes for this year, unlike in years past.

First of all, I can’t be the only one that has been thoroughly disappointed with the organizations choices the past few years. I have been bored to tears during the performances and quite frankly I’m ready for some excitement. During this past year’s show, I had moderate hopes for Justin Timberlake and was still let down. Two years ago, I was very excited to hear what Coldplay had to offer and was ultimately let down. Don’t get me wrong, I am actually huge fans of both Coldplay and JT, but I think their material is too mellow for the halftime show. I want to be entertained and get pumped up for the second half of the game. What I don’t want is to hear “Clocks” and “Fix You,” arguably the two slowest songs ever composed. The best part of the show that year was the appearances by Beyonce and Bruno Mars. Last year we had Lady Gaga who managed to meet my expectations and put on a proper show, however the glory days of the shows have come and gone.

The show that first comes to mind is Michael Jackson’s performance in 1993. I wasn’t born yet but I have seen videos of the showstopping performance he put on. Standing on stage silent and still, was the smartest start to a performance I have ever seen. He allowed the anticipation to build for over a minute, keeping the crowd on their toes, waiting for Jackson to blow the roof off the place, which is exactly what he did. Diana Ross flew away on a helicopter! What?! That is the drama I am missing from the performers nowadays. Katy Perry in my opinion came pretty close to emulating her inner Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. She came in on a mechanical tiger, and flew away on a shooting star, I mean if that isn’t dramatic I don’t know what is. Plus she gave us the gift that is left shark. Madonna featuring LMFAO, M.I.A. Nicki Minaj and Ceelo Green in 2012 was pretty epic too. What do all of these acts have in common you might ask…they all have a catalog of UPBEAT SONGS!

Some honorable mentions include Areosmith & *NSYNC featuring Britney Spears, Nelly and Mary J. Blidge in 2001, U2 in 2002 paying tribute to 9/11 victims, Prince in 2007, Beyonce & Destiny’s Child 2013, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.

Here’s hoping if Maroon 5 really is performing at the halftime show of Superbowl 53 that they live up to my expectations and make their predecessors proud.
