Happy Birthday Melissa McCarthy, the girl who always keeps us laughing no matter what role she’s portraying. Here is a look back at all our favorite Melissa McCarthy roles!
There is no way to write this list, and not include Bridesmaids. Melissa McCarthy was undoubtedly one of the best parts of that movie, and contributed to most of my laughs. I don’t think I will ever forget her deadpan expression combined with the most ridiculous lines I’ve ever heard. Nor do I think I will see it done as well. She burst out onto the scene after this movie and I couldn’t be more thankful! She is everything in this movie and I dare you to find someone who disagrees.
2. Identity Thief
I swear, I have seen this movie at least five times. Two of those times, in theaters. The scene where her character is dancing in the car, will never not make me laugh. Neither will her running from the car and getting tased. I loved her as this southern lady who looks quite harmless, but is sucking Jason Bateman’s bank account dry. We stan an opportunistic queen! The redemption arch was also great unlike the character’s real name… who would name their kid Dawn Budgie? I would stick to Diane.
3. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
It seems Melissa McCarthy does well with portraying criminals. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical when I first heard she was cast in a serious role. I have only seen her be funny so I was scared, but I went in with an open mind. Boy am I happy I did. After watching this, I don’t know why she doesn’t do more serious roles! Although the character is not very likable, Melissa played her in such a way that made me feel bad for her. I know what the character is doing is wrong, but I find myself rooting for her anyways. That is a testament to Melissa’s brilliance. I can’t wait to watch Melissa in more serious roles in the future.
4. Gilmore Girls
Before Bridesmaids, was Gilmore Girls, and the start of my lifelong love for Melissa McCarthy. While she isn’t the star of the show, she plays a big part in some major storylines. I love her relationship with Lorelei. She is the true definition of a ride or die and I love her for it. While the show doesn’t fully showcase her comedic abilities, I don’t think that does her a disservice. She proves she is versatile, which is why I’m surprised I was so shocked by “Can You Ever Forgive Me.” I have seen Gilmore Girls enough times to tell you, Melissa as Sookie is a must see.
5. Life of the Party
I watched “Life of the Party” on a plane with absolutely zero expectations. I came out of it pleasantly surprised. It’s a coming of age movie following a woman who should have already come of age. I could not understand why the daughter character was embarrassed by her mom, played by Melissa McCarthy. Sure, her mom enrolled in her college, started dating a boy her age and became friends with all her friends, but what’s the big deal? If she was my mom, I would be so happy to have her there. Plus, she teaches us, that we are never too old to face our fears and get past them.
