All the Details From the Big Meghan and Harry Interview with Oprah

Meghan and Harry gave their first interview since leaving the royal family this weekend, and boy did they drop some bombshells.

Megan and Harry’s highly anticipated interview with Oprah aired this Sunday, and they definitely gave us what we wanted. No topic was off limits for Meghan and Harry during this interview. While I would have liked some more detail in certain areas, this was the most revealing interview about the royal family in a long time. I’m sure the Queen is super unhappy about what just happened. Let’s just say, Meghan went there. Keep reading for a brief overview of some of the biggest bombshells she revealed.

Kate Made Her Cry

The tabloids have had a field day coming up with rumors about a feud between these two. The dueling duchess headlines are essentially a gold mine. While most of these headlines claimed Meghan drove Kate to tears, turns out the opposite is true! Meghan wouldn’t give up many details, but she did say the tiff was over flower girl dresses. She said Kate wrote her an apology letter and the incident is all water under the bridge at this point.

The worst part for Meghan was that Kate could not publicly come out and correct the headlines. Kate was forbidden by the palace to set the record straight. Meghan says this is because Kate is a good person and the public loves her. I assume this would make her look bad, and the future queen needs to be loved by the public. Meghan also said she disliked the situation the media created, in which you couldn’t love one without hating the other.

Felt Silenced and Unprotected

Meghan’s experience with Kate ultimately led her to the conclusion that the palace was doing nothing to protect her. In at the start, she agreed to do whatever the palace asked, because in return they promised to keep her safe. When her friends would bring her things from the media, telling her how bad it is getting, she felt content that the palace would protect her. She says believing they would protect her is her only regret. Part of this deal included a response of “no comment” to anything she was asked by the media.

When the ordeal with Kate occurred, Meghan realized the palace is not willing to protect her. Not in the same way as they do for others at least. She says, “they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family, but they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.” She claims that by letting the world think she drove Kate to tears, they assassinated her character and made her out to be unlikeable to the public. It made her wonder “if they’re not going to kill things like that, then what are we going to do?”

A Black Royal

When speaking about Archie’s lack of a royal title, Meghan claims it was not up to her and Harry. The palace made the choice to not give him a royal title. Meghan suspects this is due to the fact that Archie potentially could have had dark skin. She claims family members spoke to Harry prior to Archie’s birth about how dark his skin might be. Meghan didn’t come out and say it, but when Oprah guessed it might be a problem if he was darker, she didn’t disagree.

Meghan and Harry were also informed that Archie would not receive security without a title. This concerned Meghan because in her eyes they “haven’t created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder. You’ve (the palace) allowed that to happen, which means our son needs to be safe.” A special convention was changed in order to make sure Archie did not get a title. This seems pretty uncalled for. Why would you not want to protect a child, regardless of his color? Especially since he is related to you.

Done Being Silenced

Without the chains of the royal family rules holding them down, Meghan and Harry will not stay silent anymore. While I don’t think they’ll do more of these sit down, drawn out interviews, I don’t see them being so tight lipped anymore. Meghan says she can no longer sit back in silence as the palace spreads false narratives about her to the press. She says she is not afraid of losing because she has lost so much already and is still standing. Her “hope for people in the takeaway from this is to know there is another side, to know that life is worth living.”

Diana Would Be Proud

Harry later joined Meghan in the interview and dropped some more truth on all of us. It’s not surprising, but Harry thinks his mother would supportive of his decision if she was alive. He thinks she would be angry at the situation, but proud of Harry’s actions. This is a stark difference from Charles’ reaction, which apparently was to stop taking Harry’s calls. So mature Charlie.

He did say however, that his father and brother are trapped in the institution. As the spare heir, Harry had more freedom and once he felt trapped, was able to leave. Both Charles and William will be king one day so that comes with its own pressures. I’m just so happy I’m not in this family.

Harry also shared how this experience made him respect his mother and what she went through even more. He can’t imagine how his mother must have felt going through all of this alone. Meghan and Harry at least have each other to lean on. Diana literally had no one. The world truly did Diana dirty and I wish she was around to see how wonderful her sons turned out.

History Repeating Itself

If anyone, Harry knows what the combination of the lack of royal protection and overactive paparazzi equals to. Him and Britney Spears. One of Harry’s biggest fears, was watching history repeat itself. He felt that was what was happening and felt maybe this time it was “more dangerous, because then you add race in and you add social media in.” His fears are very legitimate and the similarities are quite scary.

They asked the palace for help on numerous occasions to better their situations. Their pleas for help continuously went unanswered. This is eerily similar to Diana’s experience, as evidenced by season 4 of The Crown. Harry said he knew “they could help and share some truth or call the dogs off,” but weren’t willing to do so. Their calls for help were met with replies like “This is how it is. This is just how it is. We’ve all been through it.” I don’t know about you guys, but in my family, if someone needs help, we help them. Strange concept, I know.

Takeaways

I am ashamed to say, I was one of those people who wasn’t a big fan of Meghan when they first got married. I hated her even more when they announced Megxit. After watching this interview, I changed my mind about her. She isn’t an opportunistic actress who married a Prince and caused a bunch of trouble. She didn’t marry Harry to jump from C-Lister to A-Lister. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and I have to constantly remind myself of that now. I should know better, I’m a journalism major, I learned about agenda setting and media manipulation.

Anyways, what did you think of Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah? Did you get all the gossip you wanted? Let me know in the comments!
