Lets all gather around the red table and get ready for another season of the Smith family’s Red Table Talk.
The long awaited, and heavily demanded second season of Jada Pinkett Smith’s show, Red Table Talk, premiered Monday and it was a hit. Red Table Talk is a FaceBook series featuring Jada, her daughter Willow Smith and her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, a.k.a Gammy. Together the trio, spanning three generations, discuss topics traditionally considered taboo. In season 1 they tackled darker subjects including, surviving through grief, the hardships of motherhood, drug addiction, as well as suicide and cutting. They also discuss blended families and the difficult dynamics in place, and how they chose to navigate through the journey, eventually achieving a peaceful co-parenting relationship. They also discuss more fun topics, equally uncomfortable yet more lighthearted, such as sex. The discomfort in Gammy’s face during that entire episode said it all as she spoke about her sex life in front of her granddaughter.
One of the standout moments came in the early episodes of the series, where Willow exposed to her mother and grandmother for the first time, that she used to cut herself. This is the first episode I saw, and after watching it, I went back and watched every other episode released up until that point. Although society has come a long way in a lot of different places, one subject that has remained taboo is mental health, self harm and suicide. It was refreshing and informative to hear women of different generations speaking on and sharing their experiences with something that is uncomfortable to talk about. Specifically on Willow’s case, she mentioned feeling unable to talk about her feelings at the time, due to fear of being judged. She felt, her circumstances from an outsider’s perspective, as the child of two A list celebrities with an abundance of wealth around her, did not reflect the way she was feeling on the inside. Feeling judged by others and similar experiences with depression is something many people can relate to and seeing others share their experiences helps to heal.
In this weeks episode, the ladies were joined by Will Smith. The discussion was mostly about how Will and Jada met and their road to actually dating and eventually marriage. The story of how they met was really funny and proves to viewers that everything works out the way it is supposed to and that timing is everything. Throughout the episode reveal their biggest issues in the past as a couple, and how they overcame them. One of the coolest things they revealed is that for the first 20 years of their relationship, they did not curse while speaking to each other and never raise their voice at each other. They were able to identify their triggers and what actions would lead to the end of their relationship, which neither person wanted to end. It’s really cool of them to be so in tune with themselves and know what they want and what they have to do to get it. I applaud them for that and think that is a quality everyone can learn from. To not speak in anger, but to find the root of our anger and find a way to explain to the other person what set us off, once we have calmed down.
Personally, I cannot wait for episode two next week. Next weeks episode will be a continuation of their conversation with Will Smith and is supposed to be even more revealing than this weeks. I’m so happy this show is back and I can’t wait to watch every week. All episodes are available on Red Table Talk’s FaceBook page.
