Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in an upcoming movie about the weekend the beloved former royal’s decision to divorce Prince Charles.
The reaction to Kristen Stewart being cast as Diana is a mixed bag. While some people see this as perfect casting, others are not so sure. I feel as if there would be discontent no matter who was cast. Princess Diana is such a beloved figure in pop culture, that anyone would be apprehensive to go about it. Most recently, in 2013, Naomi Watts took on the challenge. Prior to Naomi, there were other films, but they were made for TV movies and received little to no attention. The Crown has also cast their Diana, however the new season has yet to air and will focus on a younger Diana. Kristen is the only actress since 2013 to accept the role, and we’ll have to wait and see how she does.
Is Kristen Right For The Role?
Personally, I think Kristen is a great choice for Diana. She is a great actress and has done so many amazing, low-key indie films. I think people who haven’t followed her career, only see her as Bella from Twilight. Forget about Charlie’s Angels, because that was horrendous, and look at her other recent work. She was amazing in Still Alice and Clouds of Sils Maria. Let’s also not forget that she had a career long before Twilight ever came about. Starring along legendary actress Jodie Foster in Panic Room is something she can always brag about. Anyways, anyone with doubt surrounding this casting should watch Kristen’s other movies, not just Twilight. Her IMDB page is loaded.
The movie, titled Spencer, focuses on the weekend Diana realized she wanted a divorce. Director Pablo Larrain told Deadline the film will explore what that decision looked like. How exactly does a person decide they no longer want to become a monarch? The movie will explore Diana’s decision to get back to the person she was prior to entering the world of the royals. That is a decision I can respect. I can only imagine how hard it is to leave a marriage, let alone a life of full on luxury. Not that she didn’t have that on the outside but still. She knew the scrutiny she would get from his family, but she did it anyways and I respect that. I just hope this doesn’t bring stuff up for Harry and William.
