Friday Favorites; Ellen DeGeneres

When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel, so bad! Welcome to my favorite things.

I’m going to start off my first Friday Favorites with my forever favorite human being, Ellen DeGeneres. I have been watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show since I was 11 years old and I happened to stumble upon a YouTube clip of one of her shows. Eleven years later and I have not missed a single episode. When I was in middle school, I would have my mom record episodes on our DVR if I knew I wouldn’t be home in time to watch it live. In my head, the two of us are best friends and my invite to her super epic 60th birthday party was lost in the mail. My biggest dream in life is to be invited to be on her show where I’ll win her over with my charming personality, and we really will become best friends. There are many reasons why Ellen is my best friend, and why she should be yours too.

No matter how sad you feel, Ellen can cheer you up. There have been many times in my life where I’ve had a bad day and everything irritates me. Everything that is except, Ellen. Her show is one hour of pure joy and happiness. When I was 15 my cousin gave me the ultimate gift and managed to get me tickets to be an audience member. It was everything I expected and more. Forget Disneyland, the sound stage where The Ellen DeGeneres Show is filmed, is the happiest place on Earth. Just like when you watch her on TV, you cannot help laughing at her jokes or dancing along as she dances up and down the aisles. Her humor is never at the expense of someone else and she gives off a generally positive vibe. At the end of every show she preaches kindness and I think that is a message we can all get behind.

Every word that comes out of her mouth is hilarious. It’s no surprise that she’s funny, considering she has made a living as a comedian, but it’s an even bigger feat taking into consideration she never tries to get laughs at the expense of someone else’s feelings. Most comedians call people out, not always by name, but they heavily imply who they mean. Ellen’s humor has always been about been about the problems that people face, turning something horrible into something funny. In her HBO comedy special, The Beginning, she does an interpretive dance about the feelings she experienced after coming out. I can’t even think about the dance without smiling, it was that funny. Her unique ability to turn something that dark into something so positive is inspirational and something we can all learn from. Through watching her comedy I have learned never to dwell in the bad place, but to let myself feel sad for a moment, and then move on. Plus later on in the special she goes on a one and a half minute hilarious rant about cheese. Who else can make cheese funny?

Whether she’s pointing out the problems in society, big or small, scaring celebrities on her show, playing Ellen Morgan on her sitcom, or voicing Dory the forgetful fish, she will always be my favorite person to watch. Her newest Netflix special Relatable is set to debut on December 18, and I cannot wait. Don’t miss it, I think it’ll be a good one.
